Relief Operations for Flash Flood Victims

August 6-8, 2012, Metro Manila experienced continuous torrential rainfall, causing landslides and flash floods in low-lying areas around the city and neighboring provinces, forcing families to flee their homes in search of higher ground.

The seasonal monsoon rains, exacerbated by a tropical storm off Taiwan, brought down 472 millimeters of rain in 22 hours – more rain than Tropical Storm Ondoy which ravaged Manila back in 2009.

In light of this calamity, we reached out to all our donors on behalf of all our scholars and their families who lost their homes and possessions to flash floods and landslides brought on by the rain.

In the days that followed, we received donations of clothing, shoes, beddings, towels, drinking water, canned goods, assorted food items, and cash from generous donors.

At the Bagong Silangan Covered Court to distribute relief goods to families affected by flash floods.

With the cash donations we received, we bought rice, drinking water, and assorted food items, which we re-packed in grocery bags to give to each of the affected families.  Along with a bag of groceries, each family received a 5-kilo bag of rice, and 2.5 gallons of drinking water in a refillable container.

ABC college scholar and volunteer Alyssa Villagracia handing out bags of groceries to each one of the recipients.

The first batch of relief items were distributed on August 10, 2012 to 124 families in Bagong Silangan, Quezon City, including our 25 pre-school scholars and 34 elementary and high school scholars, with the help of our partner, ERDA Foundation.

ABC intern Kristina Robles giving each recipient family a 5-kg sack of rice.

ABC college scholar Alexis Balansag giving each recipient family a 2.5 gallon container of drinking water.

The recipients of the relief goods were very grateful for the much needed support to help them get back on their feet again.

Families in Bagong Silangan choosing clothes, beddings, towels and other things they might need.

We would like to thank ERDA Foundation and the Bagong Silangan area leaders for their help in mobilizing and organizing the recipient families during the relief operations, and all our ABC Foundation volunteers.

Chairman’s Note and ABC Foundation Updates

By: Lewis Edwards

“It is really hard to see people who have so little, lose everything”. That was the quote of a good friend three years ago when the Philippines experienced Tropical Storm Ondoy. My friend, with several of his friends, was out in a boat for several days rescuing people in distress all around Metro Manila.  Last week we had a very similar situation caused by monsoon rains. And as we, A Better Chance Foundation, did 3 years ago we have our own disaster relief program and on Thursday (August 16), we will come to the aid of 150 families in Bagong Silangan, Quezon City, bringing them rice, water, canned goods, clothing and bedding. All funds for this effort came from donations made by scholar sponsors who we thank for their extra generosity.

Among the 150 families are 25 of our preschool scholars from this area. Among all of our scholars, this area, Bagong Silangan, was the hardest hit as it is a flood plain and suffers mightily when the heavens pour down rain in epic proportions as happened last week.

Once or twice a year I like to write all of the friends of A Better Chance Foundation a brief letter on what’s going on with our foundation programs and the paragraphs above were not the intended message but events overpowered us and pushed us temporarily in another direction, disaster relief. We will spend the next 10 days on coming to the aid of our scholars’ families and others, but in the meantime, our nearly 1,200 scholars are back to school.

The quickest way I can give you an update is by linking you to my Chairman’s Note, which I have written for our upcoming newsletter.  Click here to read it.

Finally, I must share today’s good news.   Friend and donor George Nicol of San Francisco, Ca.  has sent us 2 secondhand laptop computers and we have awarded them to our 2 outstanding college scholars, Ghita Reyes and Maricar Sta. Ana.  Ghita Reyes is a 3rd year college scholar at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines majoring in Journalism, and Maricar Sta. Ana is 2nd year at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines majoring in Tourism Management.

A Thank You Letter from Night High Scholar Rosanna Reyes (St. Dominic Academy)

Every school year, we receive countless thank you letters from our Night High scholars, which we pass on to sponsors.

The letters usually contain messages of gratitude and appreciation, but every once in a while, we come across exceptional letters which contain not only messages of thanks, but touching stories about the scholars’ lives.

We’d like to share a particularly touching letter we received from a 4th year Night High scholar from St. Dominic Academy, Pulilan, Bulacan at the start of S.Y. 2012-2013.

"But blessed I am to have you, how blessed I am!"

July 11, 2012

Dear ABC Foundation,

To our dearest benefactor, I am very glad to tell you that we have successfully become 4th year high school students here at St. Dominic Academy, Pulilan, Bulacan.  We are still very excited to learn new things and gain more memorable experiences together.

Last year and earlier this year seemed very difficult, but as our adviser always tells us, “We feel things according to howwe think of it.”  We must not judge things quickly, nor form bad impressions.  We must be always positive in looking at things!

Last year, I was an honor student; an outstanding student getting an overall average of 93% in my report card.  That means I have good grades and I am very, very thankful for it!  Sad to say, last year was also the worst year of my life.

My youngest nephew left us last September 8, 2011.  That was really bad news for all of us.  I loved my nephew so much that I almost cried out all my tears.  Not long after that, my 71-year-old father also left us.  He died January 12 of this year (2012).  I almost lost everything I valued in my life.  Weeks quickly went by even before we had time to move on.

I’ve changed a lot since then, and almost all of my classmates noticed it.  I’ve become emotional and lost weight.  Because of what happened, my grades fell, though not low enough to be removed from the honors list.  I didn’t think I could ever recover.

Months after, I decided to work while on vacation.  Those days were very hard. I got to work with adults, and people who seemed to have no values in life.  My position in that company was a food handler assigned to remove the internal organs of chickens to be delivered all around the country.  I didn’t get enough sleep.  Our work time starts at almost 2:00 in the morning, then will end at 2:00 the next day.  I stand there for almost 15-20 hours.  But that didn’t matter to me.  I became busy and finally moved on, not realizing that I’ve helped my mother already.  My salary was used to buy groceries and other needed things at home.  I was very happy seeing my mother smile and be proud of me.  I was very honored.

From there, I started working at my school.  I am now a working student.  I don’t ask for money anymore, I support myself in my studies.  I am very proud that I don’t bring stress to my mother anymore.  I know that she’s too old to be working so hard in order to get me through school.  She’s already 55 years old.  Now she’s all that I have and I’ll do anything just to make her happy and content.

My mother means everything to me.  I study hard for her, which is why I am very blessed to have you, my dear sponsor, by my side.  You make my dreams come true every day of my life.  Through all of you, my life has become meaningful.  I can write, speak, and use English now because of all of you.  Your help means so much to all of us.  If I am not studying right now, honestly, I might already have a spouse, or be pregnant, or planting rice at the fields and working very hard; and maybe I won’t get a chance to have a pleasant life, a life that we’ve  always wanted.  And worst, I might have become a drug addict, or a prostitute!

But blessed I am to have you, how blessed I am!  You’ve not just given me an education, but also a chance to be the future of our country.  A chance to be a teacher, to change from being bad to good, a chance to be a wonderful role model, and many, many more.  Helping us also means helping our country, and that is the greatest help of all!  You are our new hero!  An inspiration for all of us!

Thank you..  Thank you very much!  I wish you all the best in life, more of all you are giving us.  May God see you and all your goodness and record it, so that He will reward you twice, thrice, and many more!!  May everything in your life be well and as God planned, and may you find happiness, receive more love and gain more blessings from God!

Salamat po (Thank you)!  Salamat po talaga (thank you very much)!  Mahal po naming kayo (We love you all)!!  Till next time!

Respectfully yours,

Rosanna V. Reyes

In Memory of ABC College Scholar Sarah Mae Igne (1991-2012)

SARAH MAE IGNE: A True Fighter

By:  Larissa Mhiles Esquilon*

Sarah Mae was a Night High School Scholar from Siena College, Taytay, Rizal who graduated last S.Y. 2010-2011. Sarah was one of the best people I have ever known. Why? Simply because she never gave up on the challenges she faced every day. I was one of her believers because I knew that no matter how hard life was for her, she could prove to everyone that she could also live like a normal teen, that she could also do whatever she wanted to. We all know that even with her disability, she continued to achieve her goals in life. Experiencing pain and discrimination in life, I think, was one of her reason for being closer to GOD.

Sarah Mae Igne during her 5th year as a Night High scholar at Siena College, Taytay, Rizal.

I would like to share our story. During our childhood, our families were like one big happy family who were always there for us. Her parents stood as our second parents because they took care of us when we were little kids. Sarah was my childhood best friend. Since we were little, we used to play and go to school together, we ate and shared our food, we joined school activities, we did our homework together, and we traveled, and took pictures of every happy moment we shared together. And we continued doing those things up to high school.

While we were on our journey through high school, I knew that Sarah was having a hard time proving to everyone that she could do things normal people could do. With all her painful experiences in life, I knew that it shaped Sarah to become a better person because she never got tired of holding on and still continued to dream. I knew that she’s not like other normal teens because she was restricted from physical activities; she couldn’t run, she couldn’t dance flexibly, but I knew that deep within was a woman with a strong personality who never lost hope despite of all the troubles and discrimination she experienced.

I can say that Sarah was a cheerful person because I was able to witness those times when I saw her laughing. She would always smile politely at me, and that used to absolutely delight me when I was having a bad day.   She always used to tell me some funny stories in order to lessen stress from studying. She also used to crack jokes to make people laugh, and that was what really made Sarah an amazing person.

Sarah spent most of her time with us – with her friends, family and classmates. Every weekend, Sarah was an active member and a good leader in their church. She was always present during their Sunday service because Sarah was part of the S.W.A.G (Someone Who Admires GOD) team.

Sarah studied her first year of college as a Bosch scholar at the College of Arts and Science in Asia & the Pacific, majoring BS Psychology. Sarah was really a true fighter because we all knew that she suffered from scoliosis. The condition of people who suffer from skeletal immaturity worsen over time. Because of her condition Sarah used to undergo therapy so she could maintain her ability to participate in activities for people without disabilities. Truly, scoliosis caused Sarah much pain, but it never stopped her from doing what she wanted in life. God created us and gave us the gift of life but He could also get it back so we could live with Him in eternal life.

When a close friend of yours dies, it can be really hard to accept. Sadly, God already ended Sarah’s life.  I will never forget how one ordinary day could suddenly end with shock, hurt, and sadness.  It was early morning July 26, 2012 when I received a text message from our Nanay, Sarah’s mother. Nanay said, “Tapos na ang paghihirap ng anak ko.”(My daughter’s hardships are over).  I didn’t want to believe that it was true.   I was so shocked that I couldn’t even cry.  I was at home preparing for school and I remembered our conversation the night before she died.  I was speechless, with my jaw wide open, and just stared at the text message. When reality finally set in, I began to cry. I was crying, telling myself it couldn’t be true. After I got the news, I told everyone that Sarah passed away.

Now I can say that disability is not a hindrance to gaining friends, and Sarah proved that because friends, relatives, classmates and sponsors came to her funeral and gave their deepest condolences to her family. The sadness I felt was that Sarah died so young and she was not able to see the love and sacrifice of the people who were always there for her.  Sarah made our world light up with her amazing laughter. I will always be a proud best friend and sister to her because I realized that she was really a true fighter and she showed everyone that with God you will be ABLE to do anything. I will never see her again. I love her.

On behalf of Sarah and her family, I want to thank everyone who was there with us during her funeral: First, our beloved sponsors Robert Bosch Inc., Ms. Annette Helbig of Springboard Foundation, and Mr. Lewis Edwards who was with us at Sarah’s burial. Sarah would not have been able to finish her studies without Sir Edwards’ unwavering support. As his scholars, we’re thankful for his continuous support and inspiration. He is a father and a mentor who is willing to help without asking anything in return. Sir Edwards is truly God’s instrument.

To the teachers, classmates, co-scholars, sponsors, family and friends: I want to thank you for being with Sarah until her last day. Thank you for showing your deep love to my dearest sister and best friend. I know that we will never forget our fond memories of her. Though she passed away, we are very grateful for we all know that Sarah is now enjoying her new life with our Almighty God.

Heaven is a happier place

With the sound of her laughter

We laughed, we played

We sang, we were loved

We had fun and music

And children and laughter

My life has been enriched, because of Sarah.

“There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens”. -Ecclesiastes 3:1

School Year 2012-2013

School year 2012-2013 is now well underway, and we would like to welcome all our new, as well as our continuing scholars for the new school year.

Welcome back to the graduating class of 2013, at Siena College, Taytay, Rizal.

Our new scholars this school year include 4 classes of 1st year Night High Scholars at Siena College, Taytay, Rizal; Quezon City; San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, and at St. Dominic Academy, Pulilan, Bulacan; 10 Pre-school classes with ERDA, and 42 college scholars who graduated from our Night High School Scholarship Program at Siena College, Taytay, Rizal, Quezon City, and San Jose del Monte, Bulacan.

Among our 42 new college scholars, 19 are being sponsored by Springboard Foundation and Sykes, Philippines.  The 19 college scholars were part of a bigger group of 45 Night High School Scholars from Siena College, Taytay, Rizal and Quezon City, which Springboard Foundation and Sykes, Philippines sponsored throughout their 5 years of secondary schooling.

In addition to the 19 scholars, 3 more college scholars are being sponsored by the same generous individuals who sponsored them throughout high school.

Last school year, 8 of our scholars graduated from college, and are now either employed, or are taking review classes for their licensure examinations.  Our college scholars this year graduated with degrees in engineering, accounting, nursing, education, and broadcast communications.

Apart from our new scholars, we have over 700 continuing scholars from elementary to college, and are expecting over 100 scholars to graduate from our Night High School Scholarship and College Scholarship Programs in March, 2013.

Our Night High School Scholarship Program will undergo a big change starting this school year.  Because of the recent implementation of the K+12 Program by the Department of Education, the Night High School Scholarship Program in some Siena College campuses will be 6 years, instead of 5 years.  This adjustment is being implemented at Siena College, Taytay, Rizal, and at St. Dominic Academy in Pulilan, Bulacan.

This school year, we are looking forward to doing all our usual activities, like Eyeglass Projects with Dr. Jeson and Ms. Anne Viñas, and many more with our scholars and sponsors.

Our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to all our sponsors, partners, scholars, and friends who have continually supported and encouraged us over the years – Thank you, and we hope you join us again this school year!

A Testimony from a Former Night High Scholar – Rochelle Majaraiz

Rochelle Majaraiz is a member of the first Night High School class at Siena College, Taytay, and graduated in 2006.  She was one of the 3 alumni who gave a testimony during the Alumnight at Siena College, Taytay, Rizal on March 3.

Rochelle lost her family at an early age, and found comfort, guidance, and encouragement from her friends, teachers and Dominican sisters of Siena College, Taytay, first as a Night High scholar, and later as a college scholar.  After graduating from the Religious Education Program at Siena College, Taytay,  Rochelle took and passed the Licensure Examination for Teachers in 2010, and is now teaching Christian Living and Values Education at Siena College, Taytay, Rizal.

Below is the moving testimony delivered by Rochelle.

*****

Rochelle Majaraiz sharing how being a Night High Scholar at Siena College, Taytay, changed her life.

By Rochelle Majaraiz

I’m standing here in front of you for two reasons; the first isto share the goodness of God and, the second is, to thank all the people who have been God’s instrument of His love for me. I have  had a lot of struggles in my life, and God has used every one of them to shape me and mold me into the woman I am today.

Truly, tragedy, and pain in life will bring you closer to God. Why? Let me share my story with you.  I think some of you have heard it many times before,  but I will never get tired of sharing it, because it shows how God has helped  me, not only in the past, but up to the present.

I come from a broken family. If there are those who belong to the NBSBs (No Boyfriend Since Birth) group, I belong to the NFSB – No Father Since Birth group.   And my mother died when I was in grade six. I think my older brother was so sad by what happened, that he decided to follow them after two years.  Good thing I’m a happy person, because I’m still here, alive.

With all these heartbreaking tragedies in my life, I’ve asked God so many times, “why me? Why have all these things happened to me?    If your father dies, does your mother have to die too?  Can’t one stay behind?”  Indeed, we can’t question God’s  will. His will is always for the best. Those painful tragedies happened for a reason, and I  have learned to accept God’s will for me because if youkeep yourself trapped in the past, you won’t be able to move forward.

Yes, I belong to a broken family, and it has led me to this school, where I surrendered and allowed God to work in my life. I may not be blessed with a real family, but I am very blessed with people who have healed  my troubles. Without this school and the people who have made everything possible for me, I would not be the person I am today.

To the Dominican Sisters: I was once like a seed planted in this school. Thank you for taking good care of me. Thank you for forming me to be a good Christian. Thank you for the spiritual nourishment you have given me for it has made in me a deep- rooted belief in Christ, no matter how hard life is. Now, I’m a full grown plant and I can share my fruits with my family, students, and others in my own simple ways. I am now, a symbol of your warmth, love, and care, throughout these years.

To Mr. Lewis Edwards: without your unwavering support, I would not have been able to finish my studies. Thank you for the support and inspiration. Sir, I may not be blessed with a father but you are more than a father to me. To me, you are a father who is willing to help without asking anything in return. You are truly God’s instrument. We may not see each other often, but you will always be remembered because you have influenced my life greatly. May God bless you more for your goodness.

To Mr. Renato Logatoc: Sir I always see you around campus, but I never really got the chance to talk to you and thank you for everything. Sir, whenever I see you, I always end up just saying “Hi Sir!  Hello Sir!”  Maybe it’s because you’re always so busy, or because you walk too fast.  Even so, Sir, , I want you to know that I am very thankful for you. Thank you for making everything possible for me. Thank you also Sir for making this Alumni Night possible. Thank you very much.

To all the teachers: Thank you very much. I think that being what I am now, a TEACHER,  is the best gift I could give you. I am now a teacher and I owe this to you. Thank you for your untiring support, and for all you have taught me.

Above all, I thank God for everything. Truly, there are things I must do and allow God to do in my life. I surrender to Him and allow Him to bless me abundantly. If I didn’t allow God work in my life, I would never be the person standing in front of you right now.

Again, Thank you and God bless us all.
