February 19, 2013, ABC Foundation held its 6th annual Night High Scholars’ Assembly at Siena College, Taytay, Rizal. The Night High Scholars’ Assembly is organized every year to give all our 5th year Night High Scholars from the different Siena Colleges a chance to meet and interact with each other before they graduate.
For the past 4 years, the Assembly’s activities have included a Quiz Bee competition for the participating 5th year Night High Scholars, but this year, a choir competition was held in lieu of the usual Quiz Bee competition.
For the choir competition, each school’s choir was asked to prepare three songs – an inspirational song of their choice, a common song with which they will be judged, and a victory song to sing if they win the competition. The common song all the schools had to sing was “Let it Go,” from the Walt Disney movie, “Frozen.”
The choir competition judges were, Mr. Pete Bautista, Prof. Greg de Leon from the U.P. College of Music, Mr. Bob Sellar, Ms. Beverly Sellar, and Ms. Annette Helbig, founder of Springboard Foundation. The criteria for judging the choir included voice quality, blend and balance, stage presence, choreography, and props/costume.
All of the schools did a wonderful job in singing their chosen songs and their rendition of “Let it Go,” but in the end, 3rd and 4th places were awarded to the Night High Scholars of St. Dominic Academy, Pulilan, and Siena College, San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, second place was awarded to Siena College, Taytay, Rizal, and 1st place was awarded to the Night High Scholars of Siena College, Quezon City.
The Assembly was attended by various friends and sponsors of ABC Foundation, namely Ms. Annette Helbig of Springboard Foundation, who said a few words of inspiration for the scholars, and Ms. Rebecca Warren, Principal of the Mahatma Gandhi International School in Merville Parañaque, who offered international scholarships for the graduating scholars. Also in attendance was Prof. Greg de Leon of UP Diliman, who sang the National Anthem and 3 special song numbers. Aside from being a Professor at the U.P. College of Music, Prof. Greg de Leon is also a celebrated opera singer.
Kristofer Delas Peñas, Night High Alumnus from the Class of 2009, was also in attendance and said shared words of encouragement to the graduating Night High Scholars. After graduating from Night High School, Kristofer went on to become an ABC College Scholar at UP Diliman. He has since graduated from BS Computer Science, and is now an instructor at UP Diliman while studying for his Master’s Degree.
