We have a total of 1,042 scholars for School Year 2010-2011 from preschool to college, with 659 Night High Scholars, 161 of which just started their 1st year of Night High School.
We have 45 new freshmen Night High scholars at Siena College, Taytay, Rizal; 43 new scholars at Siena College, Quezon City; 45 1st year Night High scholars at Siena College, San Jose del Monte, Bulacan and 27 1st year Night High scholars at St. Dominic Academy, Pulilan, Bulacan.
At the beginning of every school year, we go to each one of the 4 Siena College campuses to welcome our new freshmen Night High School scholars, by organizing an orientation, where we tell the freshmen class what is expected of them as Night High Scholars.
During a freshman orientation, we introduce the Night High scholars to ABC Foundation and give them an idea of what we do. We explain the rules which need to be followed in order to successfully graduate from the 5-year program, and when able, we also introduce them to their sponsors. We teach the scholars to value their sponsors and try to establish a relationship with them through the writing of ‘thank you’ letters and giving of report cards. But most of all, we teach them the importance of “paying it forward;” to appreciate that what they have received is a gift, and that someday, when they’re able, they should, in their own way, also help someone in need.
In their freshmen year, Night High scholars are usually small, shy, and reserved, and we are pleasantly surprised when we see their transformation each year. We are privileged to observe the changes they undergo as Night High School scholars, from once quiet and uncertain, they bloom into mature, confident, intelligent young men and women.
August 9, 2010, we visited St. Dominic Academy in Pulilan, Bulacan to welcome our new 1st year scholars, as well as to welcome back our continuing Night High Scholars, the oldest of which are now in their 3rd year. ABC Foundation started a partnership with St. Dominic Academy in S.Y. 2008-2009 when it sponsored a class of 1st year Night High School scholars and started a daily feeding program for all its Night High scholars, sponsored by Bob and Beverly Sellar of Pleasanton, California. In S.Y. 2008-2009, St. Dominic Academy already had 2 grade levels of Night High scholars.
In S.Y. 2010-2011, there are now 5 grade levels of Night High School at St. Dominic Academy with a total of 142 Night High Scholars, 94 of which are ABC Foundation scholars.
On August 13, 2010, we had our orientation with our 167 Night High scholars, 45 of which are new 1st year scholars at Siena College, San Jose del Monte, Bulacan. There was a short program where each of the 5 year level classes performed a lively dance number. At the end of the program, all 167 Night High scholars went up to the front of the auditorium to perform a very well-choreographed version of the song, “Don’t Stop Believing” for their parents, faculty members, ABC Foundation and guests.
With us were Paolo Santos, Chairman Lew’s grandson, Atty. Al Medina and Mr. Rey Angeles, both long-time friends of Chairman Lew and members of the Rotary Club of Diliman, Quezon City.
More orientations of new scholars are scheduled in the days ahead.
