Our Eyeglass Projects continue to be very successful because of generous sponsors who continually support the program. By sponsoring our Eyeglass Project, sponsors are able to give students with poor eyesight the opportunity not only to improve their vision, but to improve their lives as well. By helping these children, we are not only giving them the prescription eyeglasses they so badly need, we are also helping them improve their grades and boost their self-confidence.
Our first Eyeglass Project for S.Y. 2010-2011 was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Makati, District 3830, as a continuation of a partnership between RC Makati and A Better Chance Foundation, formalized in February, 2010.
We conducted our first Eyeglass Project for the school year at the Sto. Niño Elementary School in Paranaque City in August, 2010. The school, with a population of 2,000 boys and girls, headed by Principal, Ms. Genie Ann Santos, is one of the partner schools of the Ateneo Center for Educational Development (ACED), which is, in turn, supported by Rotary Club Makati.
During the eye check-ups conducted at Sto. Niño Elementary School, August 12 and 13, Dr. Jeson Viñas and wife, Ms. Anne Viñas examined the eyesight of students from grades 1 to 6. They were assisted by Mr. Paul Villegas and Ms. Eloisa Billena from the Ateneo Center for Educational Development, who organized the students before and after their eye check-ups to ensure an orderly activity.
On August 18, A Better Chance Foundation returned to Sto. Niño Elementary School, along with the members of the Ateneo Center for Educational Development and members of the Rotary Club of Makati, to distribute 200 pairs of prescription eyeglasses to the student beneficiaries.
Along with members of ABC Foundation, members of the RC Makati and ACED were also in attendance. In attendance from ABC Foundation were Chairman Lew Edwards, Program Director, Hidie Niedo, Coordinator, Carlo Logatoc, Dr. Jeson Viñas and Ms. Ann Viñas. Rotary Club of Makati, President, Mr. Filadelfo “Jun” Rojas attended the event to show support for the program, accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Piña Rojas, RC Makati Secretary, Mr. Francis Macatulad and RC Makati member, Mr. Joe Kuan of the famous Joe Kuan siopao, who gave out free siopao to the 200 recipients of the Eyeglass Project. For the Ateneo Center for Educational Development, Ms. Carmela Oracion, Managing Director, was present, as well as Mr. Paul Villegas and Ms. Eloisa Billena. Vice-Mayor Gus Tambunting was also in attendance to show his support and gratitude to the Rotary Club of Makati, to the Ateneo Center for Educational Development and A Better Chance Foundation for bringing the Eyeglass Project to the poor elementary school students of Paranaque City.
