In partnership with the Manila St. Andrew’s Society, A Better Chance Foundation completed its 2nd Eyeglass Project for S.Y. 2010-2011.
The Manila St. Andrew’s Society (MSAS), led by Vice Chieftain and Chair of Support, Paul Pryde, is a socio-civic organization for Scottish expats living in Manila. The organization, founded in 1879, organizes events aimed to share unique Scottish cultural traditions to Filipinos as well as to strengthen ethnic bonds among its members. The Manila St. Andrew’s Society also supports local community projects focusing on children and education. In line with this charitable mission, the Manila St. Andrew’s Society recently partnered with A Better Chance Foundation to sponsor an Eyeglass Project for the benefit of poor elementary students.
The Eyeglass Project with the Manila St. Andrew’s Society was held at the Kaunlaran Elementary School in Caloocan City, which has a student body population of a little over 4,000 with an educational staff of 84 teachers, headed by Principal Dr. Ailene Canoy. The initial phase of the Eyeglass Project – the eye testing of the students, was performed by ABC partner optometrist, Dr. Jeson Viñas, assisted by his wife, Ms. Anne Viñas, from September 28-30. Students known or suspected by their teachers to have sight problems were prioritized during the 3-day testing period.
The Manila St. Andrew’s Society sponsored 260 pairs of prescription eyeglasses for the students of Kaunlaran Elementary School, and on October 7, ABC Foundation, MSAS and Dr. Viñas returned to Kaunlaran Elementary School to dispense the eyeglasses to the 260 boys and girls.
Kaunalran Elementary School prepared a special program for the eyeglass dispensing which included singing, dancing and declamation performances from selected grade 3 and grade 6 students as well as messages of gratitude from school administrators and parent and student representatives. Dr. Ailene Canoy, Principal, thanked ABC Foundation and MSAS for choosing Kaunalran Elementary School students as the beneficiaries of the Eyeglass Project, and presented Mr. Paul Pryde and MSAS with a poem she wrote expressing their gratitude.
In attendance to represent the Manila St. Andrew’s Society were Mr. Paul Pryde, Vice Chieftain and Chair for Support, Mr. Ian Meikle, Chieftain, and wife Mrs. Evangeline Meikle and Mr. Hamish Moore, Past Chieftain. Mr. Paul Pryde gave a short speech about St. Andrew’s Society and their appreciation to the staff and administrators of Kaunlaran Elementary School for all their support, and to A Better Chance Foundation for organizing the Eyeglass Project. Mr. Paul Pryde also thanked Dr. Viñas and Ms. Anne Viñas for their hard work and commitment to the project.
To represent A Better Chance Foundation, Chairman Lew Edwards thanked Dr. Ailene Canoy and everyone at Kaunalran Elementary School for their support and cooperation; Dr. Jeson and Ms. Anne Viñas for their dedication to the project; and the Manila St. Andrew’s Society for sponsoring the Eyeglass Project and providing 260 pairs of eyeglasses to the students of Kaunalran Elementary School.
Additional sponsors of the Eyeglass Project were Uni-President Food Corp. through Ms. Ferlin Berba who donated 5 boxes of Ho-Mi instant noodles for the event. Each of the 260 eyeglass recipients received a pack of Ho-Mi instant noodles.
