WELL, THE WEEKEND STARTED EARLY on Friday and it was my 78th birthday that day, the 3rd of Feb. As expected former Scholar Ivy Sedo visited our office and went along with our group to the feeding program we host daily at Kaligayahan Elementary School in Novaliches. In that school we feed 86 boys and girls, all malnourished, every school day. Before departing the office and traveling to the school Ivy and I caught up on old times, shared memories and laughs and then Ivy gave me the biggest shock when she said, ” I’ve always planned to pay it forward with ABC Foundation and I’m doing it today, please accept my check”. I was stunned when I saw the amount, twenty thousand pesos! Oh, my, I was speechless and we both needed some Kleenex at that point to wipe our moist eyes. We shared some ‘tears of joy’ the favorite expression of Rene Logatoc at Siena College, Taytay, Rizal.
The school visit was delightful, led by energetic Principal Delia Sibulo, the children put on the most fascinating show for the 12 visitors we brought there. We met some parents, some of the teachers and the staff that prepares the meals for the kids every school day. From many visits to this school and its feeding program I know that the children and their parents are grateful for the daily meal and all school personnel are supportive of this Feeding Program.
Back to Ivy. She was in the Night High Class of 2008 at Siena College, Taytay and from there she went on to a 3 years course at Meralco Foundation which was Instrumentation Technology and she was employed immediately after graduation in 2011 and is, until today, with the same company, ICI Systems Inc. She has been promoted several times and can be declared very successful in her career. And… she has been sent abroad for further studies by ICI Systems to 8 different countries and on February 25 leaves for her 9thcountry, South Korea. What an amazing career, so far!
SATURDAY CAME AND FORMER SCHOLAR WILBERT CAPITLE texted that he would be flying on Sunday to London to ‘pick up his ship’. Wilbert was our Scholar at The Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific in Bataan and recently graduated with a degree in Marine Engineering. Sure enough Sunday morning Wilbert texted me from the airport with a photo of his passport and airline ticket, saying ‘ I’m on board the plane and ready to fly to my new ship, the Sage Sagittarius, built in 2002 and my new life as a Merchant Marine Engineer’. We at ABC Foundation are just as excited as Wilbert’s family, he is our first Merchant Marine scholar to go to sea and begin his career as a Merchant Marine Officer. How good is that??!
THEN ON SUNDAY to my delight I got a Facebook friend request from MARYLOU LLANETA ENGBINO. She wrote “I’m your scholar from 2002 at Siena, Taytay. From there I went on to college at University of Rizal System, Taytay, Rizal and today I am a public school teacher’. How thrilling is that for us at ABC Foundation. We love connecting with our former scholars and hearing their success stories.
It was a great birthday weekend for me and I hope these stories give you a big smile. They certainly made me happy.
Good wishes, Lew
P.S. The weekend ended on a high note Sunday night sharing a meal with my first grandchild Martin and his girlfriend Carmina.
